In May 2015, the Australian Federal government passed a bill to merge a number of tribunals. This merger started on 1 July 2015.
The merger will see the Migration Review Tribunal join with the existing Australian Administration Tribunal (AAT).
It is not the only Tribunal to be merged with AAT. At the same time, the Social Security Appeals Tribunal and the Refugee Review Tribunal will merged.
As a result of the merger, new divisions within AAT will be created, as will a new Freedom of Information Division. The mergers will create one peak review body. It promises to be more efficient, to save money, and to share best practices.
If you had a matter before the Migration Review Tribunal, you do not need to submit a new application. All reviews that haven’t received a decision will be automatically transferred.
